Functional Capacity Assessments Explained

Clear, practical information to help you make an informed next step.

What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A Functional Capacity Assessment, or FCA, is a detailed assessment usually completed by an Occupational Therapist. It helps identify a participant’s current abilities, support needs, risks, goals and recommendations for future supports.

Why an FCA May Be Needed

An FCA may support:

  • NDIS plan reviews
  • Funding discussions
  • Assistive technology recommendations
  • Supported Independent Living discussions
  • Understanding everyday support needs
  • Building a clearer picture of functional independence

What the Assessment May Look At

The assessment may consider personal care, mobility, household tasks, communication, cognition, community access, safety, routines and environmental barriers.
